THE CHALLENGE BEFORE THE NATION The KARGIL conflict has every portent of escalating into a full-fledged War between India and Pakistan. For years, nay decades, peace has been disrupted on both the IB and LoC with minor skirmishes, intrusions from Pakistan and local gun-battles. For more than a decade Siachin has been a battleground of undying hostilities between the two neighbors. Pakistan has unleashed a low-cost proxy-war on India, first through the veil of Punjab and then through a so-called ‘freedom struggle’ in Kashmir by diverting the battle hardened Afghans. It has accomplished ethnic cleansing of Hindus in Kashmir and the process is on with impunity in the upper reaches of Jammu in Doda, Udhampur, Poonch and Rajouri. No less a person than the Director General of Police in J&K divulged these dimensions in a recent press briefing. The Kargil operation, in which Pakistan moved its regulars along with the Taliban mercenaries across the LoC to capture NH-1A, the lifeline to the northern most frontiers in Ladakh, is the conclusive phase of Pakistan’s ‘Annex Kashmir’ operation. If the reports are to be believed, massive Infiltration of pro-Pak elements has already been achieved in J&K Police. The nation stands as one behind the valiant soldiers who are sacrificing their lives in protecting the frontiers. The political leadership too has to rise to the occasion cutting across the party lines. Kargil poses a do or die situation for the integrity and unity of the nation. This is high time, the high-ups in the government
give up the rhetoric of ‘inflow of tourists to Kashmir’ and ‘Pakistani
frustration’. The ‘Operation Annex Kashmir’ has larger dimensions and needs
to be addressed militarily, administratively as well as politically. The
changing demographic profile in the frontier regions of Jammu and Kashmir,
itself has the dangerous dimensions of secession. While fighting the external
aggression, the challenge of internal changing demography too has to be
mitigated. The defence of the northern frontiers will demand a heavy price
– a price we have failed to pay during the five decades of independence.
The nation is prepared to pay this price with interest, now. There cannot
be any letup. Talks and negotiations will proceed only as the peace offensive.
